How the NZ medical care system works
- The healthcare service in New Zealand is made up of primary and secondary healthcare services. Primary healthcare (PHO) is care provided by the family doctor (general practitioner; GP), midwife, practice nurse or a number of other community-based providers. The primary healthcare provider is generally the first point of call for medical treatment. When a patient is referred to a hospital or specialist, this is called secondary care.
- The Secondary healthcare system in New Zealand is operated of 21 District Health Boards (DHBs). These DHB's are responsible for providing, or funding the provision of, health and disability services in their district. The DHB's run and operate the hospitals and community services within their jurisdiction.

New Zealand's healthcare system has a high reliance on overseas-trained doctors. In 2008 41% of doctors working in NZ gained their primary medical qualification overseas. New Zealand communities are therefore well accustomed to receiving care from International Medical Graduates which helps in the transition for a doctor practicing in this country.
The Locum Tenens pathway is an excellent way to experience the New Zealand hospital system, before deciding if they wish to relocate to New Zealand on a permanent basis. Qualifications for registration within a special purpose scope of practice can be found on the council web site or speak with a Hospital Staff consultant to confirm eligibility.

The opportunity to practice in a professionally challenging and culturally diverse environment
... whilst enjoying an unbeatable outdoor life-style
New Zealand is comparable in size to Great Britain, Colorado or Japan and has a population of only 4 million - making it one of the world's least crowded countries. It is a haven for those seeking peace, rejuvenation and relaxation as well as a playground for thrill seekers.
Recently voted one of the world's most peaceful countries, New Zealand also offers a high standard of living at a low cost relative to other Western countries. The mild New Zealand climate offers the opportunity to enjoy a range of outdoor activities from sunning yourself on one of the stunning white sandy beaches of the east coast to climbing the rugged rocky mountains of the South Island.

Here is a country where you can be on the beach in the morning, on the ski fields after lunch
... and in the hills in the evening
New Zealand's separation from other land masses about 100 million years ago allowed many ancient plants and animals to survive and evolve in isolation. Complementing our unique flora and fauna is a landscape that contains an unrivalled variety of landforms. In a couple of days drive it is possible to see everything from mountain ranges to sandy beaches, lush rainforests, glaciers and fiords and active volcanoes.
New Zealand has a unique and dynamic culture. The culture of its indigenous Maori people affects the language, the arts, and even the accents of all New Zealanders. Their place in the South Pacific, and their love of the outdoors, sport, and the arts make New Zealanders and their culture unique in the world.
